I left Basel at the end of April and am having problems getting my deposit off the agent, he claims he can, under swiss law, keep it for a year, does anyone know if this is true and secondly can anyone recommend a english speaking solicitor in Basel.

For the first bit, check this out. The bottom paragraph gives more information about getting back the deposit. Auszahlung der Mietkaution. Unfortunately clicking on 'English' doesn't seem to change much. Run it through Google translate if you need it.

If you paid less than CHF 250 per month "on account" then you might have some extras to pay for, due to the massive increase in oil price over last two years.
